When he is not assisting clients, Kel Marsh, Corporate River’s founder, facilitates export technology clusters, serves on several ICT advisory boards and advises university leaders on strategy.
“When there is something big to build, people naturally turn to methods that are familiar to them.
But what if the opportunity that they visualize requires a new innovative approach? What if the familiar path is now filled with competing businesses with more resources? What if the familiar approach turns out to have less chance of success than another approach not tried before, but makes great business sense?
Business leaders won’t know until they investigate.
If businesses are to be valuable they need to be able to operate at levels appreciated by profitable customers. Most businesses have more potential to unlock and leaders can do this with just a steer in the right direction.
Our clients say that we know how to do this.” Kel Marsh
Our evolving world brings a continuous flow of new opportunities. Business leaders who position themselves on the bridge of their business can see new developing opportunities that can’t be seen from within the engine room.
Both views are needed, however only people positioned on the bridge can gain the perspective needed to appreciate the value of both views.
We assist business leaders to see value-filled opportunities for their business from the bridge. Then we can help leaders create strategy that results in a significant leap in performance and business value.
We bring well-proven tools, international experience, bespoke methodology and a mature business network that makes business growth an effective, enjoyable and value-filled process.
SEE THINK UNDERSTAND PLAN EXECUTE GROW
We like to make things happen.
We are outcome-minded, use good business sense as our guide and we are responsible. There is a good chance that you will respect us at the end of a big project.
Some of the things that business leaders have asked us to assist them with.
Learn to like learning
Pitching marketing services to the Belgium managers of Stella Artois within a week of landing a job in London turned out to be a steep learning curve for a young New Zealander and understanding the thinking used by leaders of large businesses intent on international growth.
While inspiring to work with, senior leaders with big plans have a low tolerance for conventional solutions and demand fresh new thinking to meet challenges that often have no precedence. Some of these people took the young Kel Marsh under their wing and lessons were learned that shaped his thinking and approach to business.
Make sure your strategy has a good chance of success before starting. Working successfully with these leaders meant developing an appreciation for big-picture, predicting what lies ahead, clever strategic thinking and execution - and always pass the ‘does this make good business sense’ test.
We don’t try to push businesses into conventional business frameworks.
That tends to make businesses similar in performance and drains inspiration out of the enterprise. Instead we suspend conventional thinking until we find out a) what is truly unique about each business, b) how it can become very valuable to customers and c) how it will 'speak' to customers to gain and hold their attention.
Once we have determined these three things we find there there is a confidence to create a truly unique plan with big objectives. Only then will we introduce the best practice rules that enhance and support the elements that sets the business apart, motivates the team and makes the business exciting.
We don’t fix what’s wrong with the business – we help leaders build better businesses. These are two different mindsets leading to very different results.
From the business owner of a high growth business: “Corporate River. It's been immensely helpful having your coaching. You have helped us to understand what our business opportunities are and given us a greater sense of control and confidence. This has been essential to moving to this level and into this market. We are really looking forward to the next level.”
